Are You In "Goblin Mode"?

If you spend your days in bed binge-watching trash reality TV, scrolling endlessly on social media, eating bags of chips for breakfast, and only leaving the house in your slippers and pajamas– you have entered “goblin mode.”

Keep in mind, this is a mode that can be switched on and off. You don’t like a “real-life goblin” forever. No, sometimes you actually have it all together. But the days or weeks that you don’t? You are unhinged and cannot be bothered to care about what society might think of you.

  • Twitter user @DaveMcNamee3000 gave his own definition of goblin mode: “Goblin mode is like when you wake up at 2 am and shuffle into the kitchen wearing nothing but a long T-shirt to make a weird snack, like melted cheese on saltines,” he said. “It’s about a complete lack of aesthetic. Because why would a goblin care what they look like? Why would a goblin care about presentation?”
  • Another Twitter user explained it as “the opposite of trying to better yourself. I think that’s the kind of energy that we’re giving going into 2022 – everyone’s just kind of wild and insane right now.”
  • Cat Marnell, author of How To Murder Your Life says, “It is cool to be a goblin. Everyone is so perfect all the time online, it is good to get in touch with the strange little creature that lives inside you.”

On TikTok, goblin mode is basically the opposite of the “that girl” aesthetic which is all about organization, elaborate skincare, and clean looks. While “that girl” would describe her body as a temple, someone in goblin mode would describe their body as a garbage can – and they’re quite okay with it.
