Most people are nostalgic for life pre-Covid before the dreaded year of 2020. But believe it or not, a small subculture of people on TikTok are reminiscent about the early days of lockdown. TikTok user @wil.gos for example posted a video with the hashtags “#bettertimes #lockdown1 that’s sure to trigger some memories!
There’s no doubt that listening to certain songs or sounds can also trigger emotions and feelings from our past as well. A video-series from @trustandy called “2020core” features songs popular from early lockdown days like “Supalonely” by BENEE, featuring Gus Dapperton, Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” and that “Bored in the House” rap by Curtis Roach.
You might be wondering, wait so why are people nostalgic for March 2020?
While most of the world was struck with feelings of grief and uncertainty, to be fair, these days weren’t all bad. For the first time in like ever, people spent more time focused on their hobbies or with loved ones at home. The emotions we felt during those initial months of quarantine were complex to say the least.
There’s also a deeper explanation as to why we like to romanticize the past that could apply here - we could just be “distorted by a positive bias.” This causes us to block out the negative memories and only focus on the positive ones making things tend to appear better than they actually were.
