Gen Z has already told us that side parts and skinny jeans aren’t cool anymore and now it seems they’re coming for blonde hair. They’re taking to TikTok to declare that lighter locks are outdated and darker ‘dos are the way to go. Blonde is now being called one of Gen Z’s favorite buzzwords - “cheugy” and the look they prefer is “expensive brunette.”
A TikToker who goes by The Digital Fairy asks her viewers in a video, “Is blonde cheugy?” and points out that celebs like Gigi Hadid and Hailey Bieber have recently traded in their famous blonde locks for darker shades. She adds that “being blonde can get pretty expensive,” and says “recession roots'' became a big trend after the financial crisis of 2008, when people didn’t have money to run to the salon for frequent root touch-ups.
The Digital Fairy also brings up “expensive brunette,” which celebrity hairstylist Liam Curran explains is “all about a luxurious feel to the hair, focusing on dimension, shine and hair health.” He says the shift to desire for darker hair colors comes from clients wanting more low-maintenance looks, but not everyone is ready to give up their light hair just yet. In another TikTok, user @GirlBossTown comments that “every celebrity, cool girl and model are doing dark with their hair,” and says she still plans to dye her hair platinum blonde again on her next salon visit, but she’s concerned it will look outdated.“Am I cheugy for being blonde?” she asks. “Let me know.”
