First dates can be intimidating and knowing what to say? Even more so. But now that we’re off Zoom dates and back to meeting up in real life, those awkward first date silences are back, too. Luckily, relationship expert James Thomas has tips to keep the conversation flowing.
He suggests asking these questions to learn about your potential partner without it turning into an interview:
- “What’s your favorite way to relax?”- Rather than a generic question about their hobbies, Thomas recommends this question to “provide insight into their characteristics.” And it could lead to a follow-up question, like …
- “What was the last show you binge-watched?”- Netflix was a big part of our down time during the pandemic, so chances are, they’ve got an answer for this.
- “Do you have a ‘signature’ dish you love to cook?”- This one can tell you more about their tastes and preferences. And if they don’t have an interest in cooking, you can always follow it up with …
- “What is something you want to learn?”- Thomas says this question allows you to see if ‘their interests match with yours alongside their current priorities.”
- “If the world was ending tomorrow, what would you do?”- Answering this one takes a little more thought and their response will show you more about their personality.
- “What is the weirdest thing you’ve bought on Amazon?”- Sure, it’s a little more unconventional, but it could lead to a light-hearted conversation about shopping habits, or be a red flag if they say home taxidermy supplies or a basket and some lotion.
- “What is the best thing that has happened to you this week?”- According to this dating expert, this is a “nice way to break the ice” and it reveals whether small or big events are important to your date. Of course, the best reply would be “meeting you!”
