Congratulations! You now have a valid excuse to skip your workout today! But the catch is you must have had a really great night yesterday..possibly one you don’t even remember.According to scientists, you should make today a rest day if you’re hungover.
- No, You Can’t Sweat Out A Hangover. If you think you can get the booze out of you via your sweat glands you’re sadly mistaken. Research shows as little as 10% of the alcohol that your body hasn’t metabolized exits through sweat, breathing, and excretion.
- You’re Probably Sleep-Deprived.Part of the reason you don’t want to leave the bed when you’re hungover is because you just had some of the worst sleep ever. Alcohol increases the amount of a chemical called adenosine our brain releases, which helps us fall asleep faster, but then it rapidly decreases and throws off our REM sleep. So you are most likely fatigued and going into a workout in that state means less coordination and a greater chance of injury.
- Your Body Is Lacking Nutrients. It’s no secret that alcohol makes your liver work overtime but did you know all that effort it’s putting in also messes with your metabolism? Processing that booze creates tension on your digestive system and a struggle for your body to access essential nutrients. So your body is far from peak performance mode and you’re likely to get tired much faster than when you workout sober.
