Music Can Be As Addictive As Fast Food, Money, And Alcohol

The phrase “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” has a whole new meaning thanks to a new study from McGill University in Quebec. Researchers have found music can be just as addictive as fast food, money, or booze.Soon enough, you could actually check into rehab for ‘Bieber Fever.’

Whatever your go-to genre of music is, the result is the same. Scientists say listening to your bops triggers an area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. AKA our rewards center. To prove it the researchers had people listen to music while they zapped their head with small electric currents and scanned their brain. They ended up finding that the more someone appreciated the sounds they were hearing, the more their mind lit up with pleasure.

Music may now be considered addictive material but there is no reason for alarm. Unlike drugs or alcohol, you can’t really overdose on music, and it’s actually good for you. Studies have shown music has the ability to boost mood, fend off depression, and can boost blood flow.No word on if this means we will have to refer to record labels as “dealers” yet though.
