If you want to know the state of relationships in 2021, the best place to look is our search histories. Metro has done some digging into Google Trends and they’ve found the most asked questions that people have during this not-so-normal time in dating. Here are some of the big ones and some tips to deal with them.
- “How to break up with someone.”It seems as though the love made in lockdown is coming to an end. This question has reportedly had a 9900% increase in searches this year. If you’re one of the many wondering how to pull off a split right now, relationship therapist Zoe Williams highly recommends avoiding the trend of putting it off until after all the social distance restrictions have been lifted. Zoe says all you’re doing is prolonging the time that person will take to move on.
- “Texting my ex.”A good amount of people let their ex live rent-free in their heads during lockdown. This search has shot up 9700% in 2021. While Williams isn’t 100% for it, she’s also not 100% against it so long as you think about what you really want from sending out a text to your ex. If it’s to rekindle the relationship, that’s fine, just be prepared for them to not share your feelings. If you’re just doing it because you’re bored, skip hitting send and buy a puzzle or something instead because it will only lead to hurt feelings.
- “Arguing in lockdown.”So apparently you aren’t the only couple fighting in quarantine. Searches about arguing have seen a 9700% increase this year. Zoe’s advice for anyone stuck in this position is simply: “Choose your battles.” Some things just aren’t worth getting into it about.
