According to assistant professor Ashley Whillans from the Harvard Business School, research shows “over and over again that people who prioritize time report greater happiness than people who prioritize money.” And while these economically uncertain times may make you feel like you need to #grind while you can, you could really stand to do less work. Here are some activities that take less than 10 minutes, are completely free, and can increase your happiness.
- Organize your errands. It’s no PS5, but taking five minutes to organize your to-do list and starting to check things off can really help to reduce stress. “When we feel stressed, we often get hung up on the big picture,” says Whillans. “So it is helpful to take a big issue and break it down into small, actionable steps.”
- Message someone important.Whillans highly recommends taking a few moments out of your workday to “message someone important to you that you haven’t spoken to for a while.” After all, who doesn’t love getting a random meme to break up their workday?
- Check your vacation day balance.Give yourself a reason to daydream and ask your HR how many days of vacation you’ve got this year. Whillans says “we need to visualize and plan to take our vacation to help encourage us to follow through since disconnecting from work improves happiness and reduces stress.”And there’s no shame in buying one of those cheap exotic destinations calendars for your desk to look at when the ‘rona stress has zapped your creativity. Just skip the “life’s a beach” sign.
