Record numbers of singles, divorcees, widowers, and cheaters are turning to app-based dating to get their social lives in gear. That means there’s also more competition than ever, so you need to make sure you’re delivering a package that makes you stand out. Included in that, are taking steps to avoid the things that make you stand out in a bad way. Here are five recommendations that experts say you should avoid in order to boost your odds in the online dating jungle:
- Quotes –You only have a limited amount of space to sell yourself. Don’t waste it by lifting a quote that someone else said. Yeah, you might think it’s cool to pretend you’re really inspired by Albert Einstein, but it’s more real to show who you are in your own words.
- Sunglasses –They say the eyes are the window to the soul. If every one of your pics show you wearing sunglasses, then you’re not showing your soul. Plus, as a general rule, unless you’re Stevie Wonder, if you’re regularly wearing sunglasses indoors…you’re probably an a-hole.
- Smiles –Smiling means you're happy. If every pic shows you with some smoldering scowl or wannabe supermodel frozen facial thing, then some might question the joy you take from life.
- Politics –This is a no-win situation. Yeah, you’ll weed out those who have different beliefs than you, but you’ll also push away the people who don’t want to be around someone who thinks about that stuff way too much.
- Demands –Using phrases like “don’t bother if…” and “swipe left if…” make you look judgy and pushy. Why go out of your way to make yourself look closed-minded?
On the plus side, dogs always win. So, take a pic with one…even if you don’t have one…just to get a foot in the door.
