Bride Wants Guest To Make Wedding Decor Instead Of Buying Gift

A bride-to-be wants to know if she can ask for a labor of love instead of a wedding gift and she’s turning to Reddit to find out. The 27-year-old woman writes that she’s planning a 2022 wedding and she’s hoping her fiancé’s “incredibly crafty” aunt will use her skills to help make wedding decor.

She explains that the aunt makes “intricate and breathtaking quilts” and she loves the one made for her. She asks Reddit if it “would be tacky, bridezillaish or any other form of terrible” to give her fabric and ask her to make table runners in lieu of getting them a present. The bride-to-be writes, “On a scale from ‘she’ll be touched but get ready for a no’ to ‘she’ll get her revenge by pouring a glass of red wine down your dress,’ how bad of an idea is this?”

And while most Redditors have no issue with the bride’s question, some express concern about the potential workload and time frame of the request. A few users suggest she asks the aunt for help at least a year out and one thought she should offer to pay for the aunt’s services. Several people comment that they felt the wording “in lieu of a gift” is tacky and advise her to focus on what the table runners would mean to her. The most liked comment in the thread recommends, “Make sure she knows how much you treasure the quilt and that’s the main reason why you’re asking, rather than to save money.”
