With everyone in quarantine for most of the year, online dating has never been more appealing – or necessary. Tinder has unveiled their Year in Swipe report for 2020, revealing the way this year’s trends and trials spilled over into our dating lives. Here’s how Tinder dating looked in 2020:
- Swiping went way up.As you can probably expect, folks have been online more than ever this year. Thanks to quarantine, messaging and swiping on Tinder were up double digits by the end of the year.
- Pandemic pickup lines. The pandemic was the first thing on a lot of people’s minds, even as they browsed their dating options. So, it makes sense that when it came to coming up with a good pickup line, folks went for jokes about hand-washing, sanitizer, and “quarantine & chill.”
- Political deal-breakers.Next to the pandemic, the presidential election and ongoing racial injustice protests were weighing on everyone’s minds. Things got political even on Tinder, with mentions of Black Lives Matter up 55 times during the summer, and talk of voting doubled as the 2020 election approached.
- Pop culture pan flashes. This year’s pop culture trends were a welcome distraction from the pandemic and election. On Tinder, tons of messages were sent about “Tiger King,”Cardi B’s hit “WAP,” and the Nintendo Switch video game “Animal Crossing.”
- ONE MORE THING! Looking for love in a pandemic is also leading to new pickup lines. One of the most popular is "Wash your hands so you can come hold mine" - and Tinder ranks that as its second biggest trend. The number one topic was Black Lives Matter. And out of all emojis available, the shrug one was used the most.
