Maintaining a work/life balance when you’re doing things remotely is tough enough without making it more difficult for yourself. Which is what you’re doing if you’re not making your home office into a designated work zone. Here are some ways to optimize your space to create some boundaries while you’re stuck in quarantine.
- Sit Responsibly.According to spinal and orthopedic surgeonDr. Gbolahan Okubadejo, sitting in any position for too long is bad for your back, but how we’re sitting while working from home is extra bad. Working from your couch in a reclined position with your legs outstretched puts pressure on a spot of your body that also requires your neck and shoulders to work twice as hard to keep your head upright. Instead, set up your workstation so you’re at eye level with your computer, have your feet planted on the floor, and your elbows at 90 degrees.
- Plan Active Work Time.Another reason to stop working for your bed is that if you set your own hours, the motivation to actually get to it won’t exactly be high. Clinical psychologist Jephtha Tausig recommends setting alarms and reminders on your phone to ensure that you have a hard start and stop to your workday, and also some breaks factored in. According to Tausig, these breaks will actually increase your productivity and mood over time.
- Put Away The PJs.You’re not doing yourself any favors if your work from home ensemble is pajamas. Tausig says if you're too comfortable, your brain is going to get “chill” vibes instead of “work” ones. Now that doesn’t mean wearing uncomfortable clothes means that you’re going to work harder. It just means you need to find an outfit that isn’t going to confuse your body into thinking it’s bedtime.
