Millennials Trying To Shake The Stigma Of Moving Back Home

Pre-COVID, the news about Millennials was that we were moving out and turning the suburbs into the new hipster hotspots. And just when we thought we were out of our parent’s houses for good? The crisis hit, and the economy remembered that it hates our generation. Now Millennials are moving back in with their parents at rates that haven’t been seen since the Great Depression. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you happen to be one of them.

  • It’s Not Shameful. The shame of moving back in with your parents might be something that’s uniquely American. Take Mina for example. She had to move back in with her mother who is from the Middle East and she says it hasn’t been a huge deal since their culture doesn’t make getting out of the nest a huge priority. And with the money she’s saving, Mina has started a freelance business, traveled, and been there to help her parents through health scares.
  • Boundaries.TherapistSara Stanizai says “it's very common for adults to feel like kids again when interacting with their parents.” That’s why she recommends “renegotiate house rules” now that you’re an adult with things like curfews or having guests over. Family therapist Dea Dean also advises her clients “to introduce boundaries as desires rather than demands” when having this conversation since it tends to go over better.
  • Focus On The Positives.Don’t fall into the Boomer trap of thinking you’re just another “boomerang adult” that’s helpless, lazy, or pathetic. TherapistDanielle Moye, who has moved back home herself, recommends concentrating your thoughts on the practical and proactive aspects of having to sleep in your childhood bedroom again. For Moye, this has meant concentrating on processing where she’s been and assessing what has shaped her until now. Moye says it’s been “coming back home, and coming back home to myself emotionally.”
