They say honesty is the best policy, and thanks to one honest student, an entire class just got a bump in their grades.
A professor shares on Reddit that after one of his class’ two midterms a student contacted him to let him know that the TA graded her incorrectly, giving her 10 points higher than she deserved. The now 10% decrease in her mark would result in a 2.5% decrease in her final grade, and he thanked her and made the adjustment. He noted, “in my 20+ years of teaching, this is the first student I’ve ever had come to me to have her grade adjusted down.”
When the year was up, the student’s final grade was an 80, the minimum for an A-minus, but the teacher decided to bump her up to an A for her honesty. The problem is the professor received some backlash from his TA, who noted the rest of the students didn’t have the “accidental opportunity to come forwards and earn a higher grade” as the student in question did, so they came to a compromise.
The professor decided he would still give the honest student the 2.5% back on her exam for being honest, but then would give everyone in the class, including that student, and additional 2.5% curve on that same test.
