If you’ve got a sign that says “sip happens” or “it’s wine o’clock somewhere”you may need to plug your ears.America drank less wine for the first time in 25 years, and of course,it’s all the fault of millennials.
According to a new study, the U.S. broke vino streak in 2019 and ended the consistent rise in consumption that’s been happening since 1994. The study says we drank a whopping0.9% lesslast year.Oh the humanity!Experts say it’s our generation’s fault thatthe devil’s grape juicetook a hit last year.
“Millennials are just not embracing wine with open arms compared to previous generations,” explainsInternational Wines and Spirits RecordCOOBrandy Rand. “With the rise in low and no-alcohol products and general consumer trends toward health and wellness, wine is in a tough place.”

But when they do drink, they also hit the hard stuff instead, opting for liquor of the brown or clear variety, instead of red.
- But don’t feel bad for vineyards. Despite the decline in consumption, spending on wine actuallyincreased by 1.1% to $38.3-billion.So really, we’re drinking less of the bargain wines that come in bags.
