Want To Get More Creative At Work? Spend Less Time Working

Is your New Year’s resolution to finally get that raise you deserve? Listen up! If you want to impress your boss with your creativity the first step you should take is to ask them for some time off.

Tell them the President of Procter & Gamble's Global Skin and Personal Care Markus Strobel gave you the idea. According to Mr. Strobel the “magic formula for creativity” is being open to new ideas outside your cubicle.

When people get stuck in a narrow way of thinking, Strobel says “the results that come from that are predictable and, as such, limited in their effectiveness.” If you want to be an out-of-the-box thinker, you need to shake things up on your own end, and break from your regular routine.

So if you need to find a business solution, you shouldn’t be looking at a business textbook. Your answer might just be waiting for you inside the newest gossip rag about Kanye West’s transition to Christian artist.Who knows?

When his employees ask him how to do better at work, Strobel says he encourages them to get out of the office and stop working. While other bosses may scoff at the idea, he believes it has actually “yielded some of the best work as people come back to work with fresh inspiration.”

“Not everyone can be original,” Strobel says, “but almost everybody can be creative and come up with something that will make a marked difference to them, their industry, their community, the world.”
