“Sunday Scaries”: Anxiety That More Than 90% of Millennials Experience

Historically, Mondays have been the most dreaded day of the week, but millennials might be moving all that hate back 24 hours. You may have seen more people using the hashtag #SundayScaries. It’s a term that describes the overwhelming anxiety we feel on Sundays knowing work or school starts again in the morning.

Whoever coined the term ‘Sunday Funday’ was straight up wrong –a new survey found more than 90% of millennials and Gen Z feel the ‘scaries’ before the week ahead on Sundays.According to the experts, it comes down to some combination of the following:

  1. You're not passionate about work.
  2. You’re in a toxic environment.
  3. You feel overwhelmed with your workload.
  4. You feel underappreciated.
  5. You're bored at work.

Hopefully, that list didn’t hit home, but if it did, here’s some good news. There is still hope left to get your weekend back from anxiety. Here’s the steps you should take to get over the Sunday Scaries.

  • Change your mindset.First, you need to reprogram your brain to start being grateful to simply have work. Not to sound like your Mom but “there’s a lot of people out there that would kill to have your job.”Come up with a list of things that you’re thankful for at work and start concentrating on the good stuff. Start simple with‘a paycheck’ and work from there.
  • Find Your Sweet Spot. You deserve a job where you’re doing what you’re best at, and you’re doing what you love to do the most.Bad news, if you’re feeling the Sunday Scaries, you’re not in it.You may be able to salvage the job your in, but it’s more likely that you’ll need to start looking elsewhere to find the place where Monday morning is something you look forward to instead of dread.
