Study: 2 In 5 Adults Can’t Fix A Single Household Problem Without Google

It’s nice that we’re always one YouTube clip from learning how to do nearly anything, but are we becoming too reliant on it?

A new survey shows 38% of people say they’d be helpless and unable to fix any common household problems without the help of the Internet. So if a toilet starts overflowing the same time our router goes down? We’re in big trouble.

Apparently, the only thing we feel confident doing in our home without Google’s help is unclogging a drain. Close to half of respondents said they’d be able to do that no problem. But ask us to find a stud, patch some drywall, or fix a leaky faucet, and that number drops to below 30%. Meanwhile, nearly half of those surveyed aged 18-24 admitted they can’t fix their own home.

And yes Boomers, we know it’s all our fault.Almost all of the people over the age of 65 surveyed were able to do at least one of the aforementioned tasks without Siri, Alexa, or any of them dang talking robot machines!

Which is not great since the researchers state homeowners spent an average of $10k on repairs in 2018. So remember this for next Christmas and buy the millennial homeowner in your life a book on easy house fixes. You could be saving them big bucks.

  • By the by? Gender also plays a role when it comes to household repairs. Over half of female participants said they were unable to perform any of the fixes listed...while only 44% of male respondents said they couldn’t play handyman...and reported a 15-20% higher knowledge base than women.
