Principal Blasted For Confiscating Pizza For Class Party

A principal in Des Moines, Iowa is incurring the wrath of the Internet after canceling a pizza party one teacher decided to throw for her students to reward their hard work.

Parent Neil Erickson took to Facebook to complain about Brody Middle School Principal Thomas Hoffman. Apparently a teacher at the school was left “in tears” after she used her own money to throw a pizza party for her students only to have the pizzas confiscated by Hoffman because it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the school.

According to Erickson, after the pizzas were delivered and paid for, “Principal walks into the classroom and says 'I never approve pizza parties' or something to that effect,” adding, “ 'He took the pizzas from the kids and let them sit in the office for the teacher to pick up after school.”

  • Plenty of parents blasted Hoffman for his heartless behavior, although some noted that the teacher probably should have run the party by him in the first place so they were at fault.
  • After all the negative feedback Hoffman apologized for his actions. “As principal, one of my top priorities is fairness and equal opportunity for our students at Brody Middle School,” he shared, insisting he’s talked about this often with teachers. But, he notes, “I do want to apologize for being overly strict in applying that standard today when it came to one of our classrooms. Most of all, I want to apologize for disappointing any of our students, and punishing them.”
  • Finally, he noted, “I understand that many people have been talking about having pizzas delivered to Brody tomorrow. If that's the case, we'll gladly welcome any donations, and arrange for a nice sendoff for our 700 students on the last day before Winter break.”
