People Have More 'Digital Conversations' Than Speak Face-To-Face

Looks like we can add talking in-person to the list of things we’ll be explaining to our grandkids right next to Blockbuster and Napster. And spoiler, we’ll probably be doing this chat with them over text.

A new study revealed digital conversations, whether via text, emails, or any other messaging app, have overtaken face-to-face chats for the first time in history. And since you’re probably texting right now, you’re not that surprised.

But here’s the sad news. It’s not like digital communication platforms have seen a huge surge. The fact is, we’re talking to each other less both online and IRL. According to new research, the number of face-to-face conversations we have in a day has decreased by 15% over the last five years. And even when you include texting and emailing, over a million people surveyed said they often go a whole day without talking to anyone.Yikes.

  • And while we may like to do our shopping online without talking to a single person, doing things digitally doesn’t seem to cut it when it comes to staying close to loved ones. Even though the majority of us are using our phones or social media more than anything else to say in touch with our families, only 14% of people said they feel happier communicating digitally.

But the good news? You can fix this by going to talk to your mom in person. You’ll just have to text her first to nail down her schedule.
