Biggest Profile Turn Offs According To Real Dating Data

Dating apps are filled with people trying everything to get noticed. Sexy profile pics, witty descriptions, stand up comic level pickup lines... if you don’t keep up, you could end up facing a whole lot of left swipes.

If you really want to know how to make your dating profile a full-on love magnet, you should find out what the cold, unbiased, unapologetic data says. Luckily Bumble, Happn, and OkCupid have been tracking what isn’t working for people and have shared their list of the biggest turn-offs:

  • Anything covering your face. People want to see what they’re getting themselves into. Avoid wearing sunglasses, hats, bandanas, masks, etc. Let them see your unfiltered face.Yes, #NoFilter.Snapchat filters are liked 90% less than the average photo.
  • Group photos. The more is not the merrier on dating apps. 69% of women are more likely to receive a like with a solo photo than a group pic.
  • Selfies.Turn off your filters and give your phone to someone else.Selfies do 40% worse than other pictures and 90% worse if taken in the bathroom.Bathroom selfies really? Is this 2004?
  • Too few photos. Having three or more photos in your profile increases your matches by at least 31%.Maybe it’s time to invest in a photographer.
  • Photos with a possible significant other.Do not, I repeat, do not post a picture that looks like you’re with someone already.Pictures with a possible S.O. receive 98% fewer likes than the average photo.Girls you might look good standing next to your brother in that one pic but choose another.
  • Poor spelling/language.Use spellcheck!75% of people say they're less likely to respond to someone with spelling mistakes in their profile.
  • Texting too little. If you actually matched with someone, put some effort into messaging them. Dropping a one-word opener like “hey” has an 84% chance of being completely ignored.
  • Asking them to dinner.Going out for a meal might be a little old fashioned nowadays. Instead you should pitch going for drinks or going to a show. Those are both more likely to be accepted.
