The Science Behind Make-Up Sex

If you’ve ever stayed in a relationship that was toxic because the sex was great, good news, there’s now science to prove you’re not crazy. There’s just something about make-up sex that makes it feel different than run-of-the-mill hookups and here’s why:

Anger and arousal are like the Jonas Brothers. They’re mostly the same but kind of different. This is to say many of the hormones involved with anger are also involved in sexual arousal.

Satisfyer’s Director of Education Megwyn White says we have three hormones to thank in particular. “Adrenaline, noradrenaline, and testosterone are all released when we feel a relationship is in jeopardy.” White explains. “Each of these hormones are also connected to sexual arousal, so even in relationships where sex is less present, this higher arousal trigger can activate the desire to connect partners back together again.”

  • What’s that mean? All of the fighting sends us into a primal state and it ramps up things between the sheets. It also is kind of addictive.Why?Dopamine. It’s the chemical that’s released when you’re having a real good time in bed and getting that hit after a fight is like washing it all away. So the fight makes you feel crappy and then you want the dopamine to make it all better.
  • And PS? No matter how good make-up sex is, if it’s also coming at the end of serious abuse, you need to talk to someone and end the cycle. But if you can have small fights, like when he eats your last avocado, science says make-up sex might be right for you!
