VMAs Recap
Another MTV Video Music Awards are in the books, with Taylor Swift walking away with the top trophy, Video of the Year for “You Need To Calm Down.” In her speech, Taylor noted that considering the themes of the video, the public voting it the winner was their way of saying they “want a world where we’re all treated equally regardless of who we love, regardless of how we identify” and then urged fans to sign the Equality Act petition.
One thing to note, John Travolta presented the Video of the Year award, and when he went to hand off the trophy instead of giving it to Taylor he gave it to drag queen Jade Jolie thinking she was Taylor.
Taylor also took home the trophy for Video for Good for “You Need to Calm Down,” while ArianaGrande won the night’s the other big award, Artist of the Year, as well as Song of the Summer, whileLil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus nabbed Song of the Year for “Old Town Road.”
- Other big winners included: Jonas Brothers, who nabbed Best Pop for “Sucker;” Cardi B who won Best Hip-Hop for “Money;”BTS who won two awards, Best Group and Best K-Pop for “Boy with Luv,” featuring Halsey; Billie Eilish who nabbed Best New Artist and Push Artist; and Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello won Best Collaboration for “Senorita” (and walked on stage holding hands). - Missy Elliott was also honored last night with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and blew everyone away with her performance. She wowed the star-studded crowd with a medley of songs opening with her latest single, “Throw It Back,” followed by “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” “Hot Boyz,” “Get Ur Freak On” “Work It” “Pass That Dutch,” (which had a scarecrow and space ship theme for some reason), and “Lose Control,” with the whole thing featuring a whole host of amazing dancers.
- After several of her peers sang her praises in a video tribute, Cardi B came out to present the award, calling Missy’s performance “Fire.” “I have worked diligently for over two decades and I never thought I would be standing up here receiving his award,” Missy said in her acceptance speech. “It means so much to me. I promise you it don’t go unnoticed the support and love that you all have shown me over the years.” She also gave a shout out to artists whose videos she’s loved including BustaRhymes, Janet Jackson, Madonna and Peter Gabriel and dedicated the award to the dance community, calling them the “beat to the heart.”
- This year’s show, which took place at Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center, was hosted by Sebastian Maniscalco, who cracked jokes about the audience recording the show on their phones, Lil Nas X, Bruce Springsteen(“Jersey has had one influencer for the past 40 years and that's Bruce Springsteen”), musical feuds and more.
Of course what everyone tunes into the VMAs for is the performances, and there sure were plenty of them.
- The show kicked off with Taylor Swift performing “You Need To Calm Down,” on a rainbow-engulfed stage. She was joined by a huge group of dancers, drag queens and more, with virtual-reality lyrics popping out from the screen, as well as the words “Equality Act.” She then followed it up with her first-ever live performance of “Lover,” walking out to the front of the stage with just her guitar.
- Shawn Mendes kicked off his performance with his latest hit “If I Can’t Have You,” and then later in the show he and rumored girlfriend Camila Cabello performed their new number one single “Senorita” live for the first time, emitting such heat there’s no doubt they are a couple in real life, with the camera helping set the mood with lots of steamy close ups.
- Lizzo performed “Truth Hurts” and “Good As Hell” surrounded by dancers (in ass-less pants) and, we kid you not, a huge virtual reality twerking butt in a thong behind her.
- Jonas Brothers performed their latest single “Sucker” from of the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey, walking out of the club and onto a huge stage alongside the beach. They then followed it up with “Only Human,” with the performance ending with fireworks. (The performance was recorded Sunday night).
- Lil Nas X made his VMA debut, performing his new single “Panini,” opening the performance with a video piece in which he’s president, with jokes about his 3,162ndremix of “Old Town Road.” He then came out for his futuristic performance, which had Nas surrounded a bevy of dancers, dressed like something from the sci-fi film “Tron.”
- Miley Cyrus, a last minute addition to the show, debuted her new song “Slide Away,” which is reportedly about her split from Liam Hemsworth, and it certainly was an emotional one. It was Miley’s first performance since announcing the split.
- Among the other performances: Rossalia performed “A Ningún Hombre (Cap.11: Poder),” and was then joined by Ozuna for “Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi;” H.E.R. debuted the new song “Anti,” which was quickly followed by Normani’s booty shaking performance of “Motivation;” Big Sean performed “Bezerk,” with special guest A$APFerg, and Bad Bunny and J Balvin performed “Que Pretendes,” set in what looked like a virtual reality video game.
- The show ended with a surprise New Jersey-inspired performance featuring Garden State hometown heroes Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature, Redman, Wyclef Jean and Fetty Wap. Songs performed include “OPP,” “Da Rockwilder,” “Trap Queen,” “Gone Till November,” “No Woman No Cry,” "Hip Hop Hooray," and Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.,”with the queen rolling up on a motorcycle.
